CAPTAIN STINGAREE - A TRAGEDY IN FIVE IMAGES

DETECTIVE COMICS 527 commemorates the 500th issue since the debut of The Batman, and it begins with one of the greatest human tragedies ever seen in comics.

The issue opens with all of Batman's greatest enemies (besides DOCTOR TZIN-TZIN) being summoned under mysterious circumstances.

Pictured here are...

- The Penguin
- The Gentleman Ghost
- Two-Face
- Captain Stingaree
- Talia al Ghul
- Mad Hatter
- Killer Moth
- Mr. Freeze
- Clayface II
- Tweedledee and Tweedledum
- The Riddler
- The Scarecrow
- Black Tarantula
- The Spook
- Cat Man
- The Cavalier

But who could draw so many miscreants to one location? And why?

You guessed it. See Joker is worried that brand new uber bad guy Killer Croc is going to take over the gangs of Gotham and wipe out Batman in one fell swoop, and he's right to be worried since Croc has systematically gotten the better of Batman over the last five issues or so. His plan? Well, it's simple... we kill the Batman.

Needless to say, this plan does not sit well with Talia who was invited to this shindig on behalf of her father, and is the only one at the gathering who knows that Ra's wants Batman very much alive and baby-making with her at this point, and isn't down for whatever.

Likewise, the Joker is not receptive to constructive criticism of his plan and orders Mr. Freeze to put Talia (and her utterly ridiculous outfit) on ice.

That's when Talia does the unthinkable.

She just pulls pirate themed villain and all around goober Captain Stingaree into the path of the freeze blast (with her thigh, no less) and then pushing the frozen boulder of ice that is now his corpse on top of Mr. Freeze while she makes an exit.

This is the final appearance, pre-Crisis, of Captain Stingaree. He died from this.

RIP CAPTAIN STINGAREE - AN ALL-TIME GOOBER BATMAN VILLAIN. YOU WERE NO DOCTOR TZIN-TZIN, BUT THEN AGAIN, WHO IS?
